Brazil

Golar Power to develop

LNG import terminal in

Brazil

G

olar Power Ltd has signed a ‘protocol of intentions’

with the State Government of Pernambuco to

develop an LNG import terminal in the Port of Suape,

located in northeast Brazil.

With operations scheduled to start in 2H20,

the project includes infrastructure for the supply of

natural gas and LNG to generate electricity, in addition

to meeting the demands of industries, commerce, LNG

stations and households. To this end, Golar Power will

work in partnership with the local gas distribution

company, Companhia Pernambucana de Gás Natural

(Copergás) to bring natural gas to regions of the

State that are not yet served by traditional pipeline

networks. The project is expected to use the existing

port infrastructure owned by the State Government.

The State of Pernambuco has an estimated

population of 9.6 million people which will benefit

from the installation of the terminal. If successfully

developed, the terminal is expected to benefit the

economy of cities in the interior of the State, in

regions not served by pipeline, where natural gas

will be delivered by road using LNG ISO-containers.

Golar Power plans the interiorisation of LNG in the

country through a strategic plan that contemplates

the Northeast as a priority region for small scale

distribution. Suape is already Brazil’s largest hub for

liquid bulk and gases and, now, it will be one of the

main LNG distribution hubs in the Northeast, with full

integration of sea and land transportation modes.

Final development of the project remains

dependent upon regulatory approvals and conclusion

of commercial agreements.

INOX partners with

Shell Energy India to

develop LNG distribution

I

NOX India Pvt Ltd (INOX) has signed a memorandum of

understanding (MoU) with Shell Energy India Pvt Ltd (SEI),

a wholly owned subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc, for

partnering and developing the market for LNG supply by road

from Shell’s LNG terminal in Hazira (District Surat), Gujarat.

The MoU envisages the deployment of distribution

infrastructure, including logistics and receiving facilities

at customer end, and will offer LNG access to customers

not connected to the pipelines. This will help to increase

the penetration and consumption of clean, reliable and

cost-efficient LNG to commercial and industrial users all over

the country. The MoU also covers cooperation in developing

a larger market for LNG as a transport fuel for long-haul

heavy-duty trucks and buses.

SEI owns and operates a 5 million tpy LNG receiving,

storage and regasification terminal at Hazira, Gujarat, and

is now building a truck loading facility at this terminal. This

new partnership with INOX will help Shell to develop the

market for LNG as a preferred fuel in the rapidly growing city

gas distribution, LCNG and industrial sectors, as well as use

of LNG as an auto fuel.

Announcing the MoU, Siddharth Jain, Executive Director,

INOX India Pvt Ltd, said: “We are delighted that our

collaborated efforts will make this green fuel more

accessible. A larger gas-based industrial ecosystem augurs

well with Indian economy as well as for the environment

at the same time and is a win-win situation for all

stakeholders.”

Ashwani Dudeja, Country Head, SEI, added: “We look

forward to working with INOX to deliver LNG by trucks

and create access to LNG for customers not connected via

pipeline.”
