which might change the microstructure and therefore the
physical properties of the stainless-steel, potentially resulting
in reduced corrosion resistance and affected mechanical
properties of the welds. As a result, it is important to follow
welding guidelines to the letter.
Austenitic stainless-steels like Supra 316plus have good
weldability and do not usually require post-weld heat
treatment.
Corrosion resistance
One of the most important aspects of austenitic
stainless-steel is its strong resistance to uniform, pitting
and crevice corrosion. Corrosion resistance is important for
structural integrity, long life, protection of the LNG cargo
and for safety. Containers must keep the cargo safely inside
and should therefore not be prone to leaks. In the case of
an accident or collision, it must maintain structural integrity
and corrosion resistance to prevent the release of dangerous
flammable or polluting cargo. For example, a leak could take
the form of an extremely cold fluid jet from a container, which
would represent a significant risk to people and property.
Supra 316plus has higher chromium and nitrogen content
than the 316L/4404 grade, and less nickel and molybdenum.
The high chromium and nitrogen content offers similar or
better corrosion resistance than standard 316L/4404
austenitic stainless-steel grades in many corrosive
environments. The higher nitrogen content lends increased
mechanical strength and a high degree of work hardening
through mechanical deformation. This is important for
formability and enhances the strength of manufactured
components.
Conclusion
Stainless-steel was the ideal material for LNGTainer’s
tank design, a product that in turn will greatly bolster the
company’s efforts to support the fast growing demand for
LNG. As the LNG transportation sector continues to evolve,
innovations such as the LNGTainer tank design, utilising
unique materials such as Outokumpu’s Supra 316plus
austenitic stainless-steel, will no doubt continue to play an
important role in keeping LNG as accessible and affordable as
possible.
