ABB completes delivery for
icebreaking LNG carrier
fleet
A
BB has announced that the final vessel in a 15-ship
series has entered service for the Yamal LNG project
ahead of schedule, powered by ABB technology.
The
Yakov Gakkel
vessel is owned by a joint venture
(JV) between Teekay LNG Partners and China LNG Partners,
and joins a fleet of 15 specially designed tankers
transporting LNG year-round from Yamal LNG.
According to the statement, the vessels have been
built in less than six years and to ARC7 ice class, each
with a capacity of 170 000 m³. These ships have opened
the Northern Sea Route to commercial gas shipping
and significantly expanded the navigation period in the
direction of the Asia-Pacific region and ensured year-round
transportation of gas to the customers westwards.
The Azipod® propulsion system, where the electric
drive motor is in a submerged pod outside the ship hull,
can rotate 360° to increase manoeuvrability, which is
crucial for vessels operating in ice.
Juha Koskela, Managing Director, ABB Marine & Ports,
said: “The sheer scale of this project and the size of the
Azipod® units involved make this a milestone for ABB.
“The fuel and emissions-saving capabilities of Azipod®
electric propulsion have made it the technology of choice
for sensitive arctic conditions for almost 30 years, and we
were delighted to leverage our experience to deliver safe
and reliable technologies ahead of schedule in line with
the project’s demands.”

Freeport LNG Train 1 starts
commercial operation
M
cDermott International, Inc., along with its partners,
Chiyoda International Corp. and Zachry Group, has
announced that commercial operations have commenced
at Train 1 of the Freeport LNG project in Texas, US.
Mark Coscio, McDermott’s Senior Vice President
for North, Central and South America, said: “The past
few months have brought significant accomplishments
for Train 1 of the Freeport LNG project – starting with
introduction of feed gas in July, first liquid in August,
shipment of first cargo in September and now commercial
operation.
“Congratulations to the joint venture project team
whose commitment to safety and quality has remained
strong throughout the project.”
According to the statement, Zachry Group, as the
joint venture (JV) lead, partnered with McDermott for the
Pre-FEED in 2011, followed by FEED works to support the
early development stage of the project as a one-stop shop
solution provider for Trains 1 and 2. Later on, Chiyoda
joined the JV partnership for work related to Train 3.
The project scope includes three pretreatment trains, a
liquefaction facility with three trains, a second loading
berth and a 165 000 m³ full containment LNG storage
tank.
McDermott claims Trains 2 and 3 remain on target
to meet their previously announced schedules, with first
liquid from Train 2 being announced on 6 December, and
Train 3 initial production of LNG scheduled for 1Q20.
