full 3.2 document/certification traceability is required on all
casting and billets.
Meeting the requirements
All valves, whether high or low pressure, need to comply
with the classification society rules. Meeting these rules
was essential when Parker Bestobell Marine secured its
first order to supply cryogenic high pressure globe valves to
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd (DSME)
in South Korea.
These valves were developed in the two years prior to the
order being received and, for DSME, they were designed to
withstand a maximum pressure of 370 bar. They will be fitted
in the gas phase piping of the FGS, downstream of the boil-off
gas (BOG) compressors and evaporators. They are being
installed on the eight 174K LNG carriers being built for Teekay.
Recently, the demand for gas engines has slackened due
to the fall in oil prices, which has reduced the attractiveness of
LNG. However, there will still be reasonable growth in the
marine sector for high pressure cryogenic valves, as more ship
owners adopt the ME-GI engines for their newbuild vessels.
Legislation is set to become even more stringent and,
outside of ECAs, the limit is set to become 0.50% m/m of
sulfur content in fuel oil from 1 January 2020. This should help
to increase demand in the future for LNG as a transport fuel in
the marine sector. Valve manufacturers must focus on
meeting the requirements for ever higher pressure valves to
suit marine fuel gas systems, whilst ensuring that the marine
sector retains its excellent safety record.
